Les animaux sont des êtres sensibles. Les traités de l'UE le reconnaissent et nous avons la responsabilité morale et sociétale de veiller à ce que les conditions de vie des animaux dans les exploitations agricoles reflètent cette réalité. La réalité est cependant qu'aujourd'hui, des milliards d'animaux dans le monde sont élevés dans des conditions intensives. Des millions d'entre eux sont transportés sur de très longues distances. Le fait que chaque animal d'élevage soit un être sensible capable de ressentir la peur, le désespoir et la douleur est parfois ignoré. Ils ne sont pas toujours traités avec l'attention et le respect qu'ils méritent. Changer cette situation est une priorité pour l'UE. […] Un engagement fort en faveur du bien-être animal fait partie des préoccupations et des exigences croissantes des citoyens. […] Mais le chemin à parcourir est encore long. Dans la mesure du possible, les animaux devraient vivre dans un environnement où ils peuvent se comporter naturellement, et nous, citoyens, nous devons nous orienter vers une alimentation plus végétale, avec moins de viande rouge et transformée. Comme nous le savons tous, le changement climatique et la perte de biodiversité menacent notre avenir. La santé des humains, des animaux, des plantes, et même de notre planète, sont tous intrinsèquement liés. Nous, les humains, faisons partie du monde naturel et en dépendons pour l'air, la nourriture, l'eau - tout. Mais nous dépendons également d'écosystèmes sains, chacun composé d'espèces végétales et animales interconnectées. […] Notre tâche consiste à construire un système alimentaire robuste et résilient qui garantisse aux citoyens un approvisionnement suffisant en denrées alimentaires abordables, de bonne qualité et sûres, tout en veillant au bien-être des animaux d'élevage. Le bien-être et la santé des animaux sont à la fois la pierre angulaire de ce changement et la voie à suivre. L'ambition de la Commission est, avec l'aide des agriculteurs, de l'industrie, des organisations de protection des animaux et des consommateurs, de maintenir le statut de l'UE en tant que leader mondial en matière de bien-être animal. Nous ne pourrons atteindre cet objectif qu'en plaçant les personnes et les partenariats au centre de notre approche. […] Avec la stratégie "de la ferme à la table", nous avons une occasion unique d'améliorer la vie de chaque être, humain et animal, en ayant toujours comme fil conducteur que le bien-être animal compte. Animals are sentient beings. This is recognised in the EU treaties, and we have a moral and societal responsibility to ensure that on-farm conditions for animals reflect this. The reality is however that today, billions of animals around the world are kept in intensive conditions. Millions are shipped for very long distances. The fact that each farmed animal is a sentient being that is able to feel fear, despair and pain is at times ignored. They are not always treated with the care and respect they deserve. Changing this is a priority for the EU. […] A strong commitment to animal welfare is among citizens’ growing concerns and demands. […] But we still have a long way to go. Where possible, animals should live in an environment where they can behave naturally, and us, citizens, we need to move towards a more plant-based diet with less red and processed meat. As we all know, climate change and loss of biodiversity are threatening our future. The health of humans, animals, plants, and even our planet, are all intrinsically linked. We humans are part of the natural world and depend on it for air, food, water – everything. But we also depend on healthy ecosystems, each one made up of interconnected plant and animal species. […] Our task is to build a robust and resilient food system that guarantees citizens a sufficient supply of affordable food, of good and safe quality and with the wellbeing of farmed animals front and centre. Animal welfare and health is both a cornerstone of this shift and the way forward. The Commission’s ambition is, with the help of farmers, industry, animal welfare organisations and consumers, to maintain the EU’s status as world leader in animal welfare. We can only achieve this objective by putting people and partnerships at the centre of our approach. […] With the Farm to Fork Strategy, we have a unique opportunity to improve the lives of every being, both human and animal, always having as our guiding force that animal welfare matters.
