The gradual disappearance of draught animals from farming with the advent of agricultural mechanization has been counterbalanced by a considerable increase in livestock production for human consumption since the 1950s. Meanwhile, there have been considerable changes in human-animal relationships, with the shift to productivist principles of the last century and a continued growth in concern for animal welfare since 19th century. While, with the advent of intensive breeding, livestock have been turned into commodities, pets have increasingly become members of the family unit. This vast difference in the conditions under which animals must live, combined with the development in recent decades of scientific knowledge on the feelings and cognitive abilities of animals, has led legislators to take an interest in the welfare of livestock, not least due to the pressure exerted by animal protection associations (introduction of Article 515-14 in the French Civil Code in 2015). Since then, in order to respond to increasingly pressing societal expectations concerning animal protection, many legal academics have been examining how animals might be better defined in French law.
