Extract in French (original): The month of October brought many challenges for animal protection in Europe. The publication of the Commission's 2026 work program seems to confirm that the reform of European legislation on animal welfare in farming is not a priority of the current mandate. Secondly, despite strong opposition from civil society (see our letter), Parliament adopted an amendment prohibiting producers of plant-based alternatives from using certain terms that would henceforth be reserved for products of animal origin. Finally, two years after the publication of the European Commission's proposal for a new regulation, the reform of the rules governing the protection of animals during transport remains at a standstill.

This past month has brought significant challenges for animal protection in the EU. The publication of the Commission's 2026 Work Programme clarified that animal welfare will not be prioritized in the current mandate. The meat-denomination amendment was adopted despite strong civil-society opposition (see our joint letter), and the revision of the Transport Regulation remains stalled. Nevertheless, we look ahead with resolve as we prepare for our conference in Brussels and continue advocating for meaningful legislative advances.
