Review: The challenge to integrate Animal Welfare indicators into the Life Cycle Assessment

Scientific literature review of publications that consider the impact of livestock systems on both the environment and animal welfare. It shows that environmental impact assessment using life cycle assessment (LCA) has a much more consistent, standardized and thorough methodology than animal welfare assessments. It concludes that research is needed to integrate animal welfare assessment into LCA.

Review: Connecting circularity to animal welfare calls for a 'novel' conceptual framework based on integrity

Scientific review proposing a new conceptual framework it calls the circular welfare economy (CWE), intended to facilitate the transition to sustainable agriculture. The CWE applies the notion of circularity to welfare, defined as the quality of life as it is perceived by the individual animal itself. It also considers human integrity, defined as openness and honesty, to be a prerequisite for sustainability.

Information note from eight European Union countries, including France, opposing the ban on the transport of live animals from member countries. The reasons given are 1. that this would favour imports from third countries with less stringent animal welfare standards, and 2. the difficulty of maintaining the cold chain when transporting meat. The eight countries recommend that enforcement of EU legislation should be strengthened and EU expertise should be shared with third countries to improve animal welfare during transport.

Results of an Ifop survey for Woopets of 2005 people, including 1036 pet owners, carried out in November 2022 The results reveal that 41% of the respondents have changed their behaviour towards their pets because of rising prices, that 14% of pet owners who responded have already parted with their pets and that 7% (14% among those under 25 years old) are considering doing so in the future.
