L’OABA saisit le Conseil d’Etat sur le non respect de la législation sur l’abattage sans étourdissement

Document type: OABA press release

Summary: Halal and kosher meat, produced by ritual slaughter methods in which the animal is not stunned, is ending up on the mainstream market when no faith-based customers can be found. This is done without any labelling for the consumer.

This system of "complementary distribution channels" has been endorsed by successive governments for many years. It is a major attack on consumer freedom of conscience [...]

It should be recalled that the European Court of Justice, in its ruling of 26 February 2019, excluded from organic certification meat from ritual slaughter without stunning on the grounds that this method of slaughter causes greater pain than stunning.

The OABA has therefore given formal notice to the French State, by registered letter dated 19 February 2020 and addressed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, to adopt such measures as are necessary to conform to the requirement for the complete traceability of meat from slaughter carried out without stunning.
