Is it time for insect researchers to consider their subjects' welfare?

Andrew Crump, Matilda Gibbons, Meghan Barrett, Jonathan Birch, Lars Chittka

Published in 2023

Scientific article defining pain, differentiating it from nociception, and recalling work that has led to the conclusion that most of the 6 largest insect orders are very likely capable of feeling pain. It concludes that this fact should be taken into account by entomologists, and suggests extending the 3Rs rule (replace, reduce, refine) to insect research.

Canadian dairy farmer views about animal welfare

Catherine A Schuppli, Jeffrey M Spooner, Marina AG von Keyserlingk

Published in 2023

Article reporting the results of a survey of 22 Canadian dairy farmers to discover their views on animal welfare. Two centres of interest emerged: a focus on the animal, including the biology and emotions of animals, and dairy farmer identity, including the values farmers place on their work and their animals, the way they are perceived by society, and human-animal relationships.

A six-step process to explore facial expressions performances to detect pain in dairy cows with lipopolysaccharide-induced clinical mastitis

L. Ginger, L. Aubé, D. Ledoux, M. Borot, C. David, M. Bouchon, M. Leach, D. Durand, A. de Boyer des Roches

Published in 2023

Study identifying 7 facial action units taken from the eye and ear regions and from the mouth and muzzle for the detection of mild pain associated with induced inflammatory mastitis in dairy cows. It uses a six-step process that incorporates expression, selectivity, intra- and inter-observer reliability and measurement error (specificity and sensitivity).
