Emerging indicators of fish welfare in aquaculture

Michelle Orietta Barreto, Sonia Rey Planellas, Yifei Yang, Clive Phillips, Kris Descovich

Published in 2021

A scientific review of invasive and non-invasive fish-welfare assessment methods, with a focus on their practical application in aquaculture. New technologies are helping to improve the accuracy, automation and practical applicability of these methods.

Dairy Cows Activity under Heat Stress: A Case Study in Spain

Adrián Ramón-Moragues, Patricia Carulla, Carlos Mínguez, Arantxa Villagrá, Fernando Estellés

Published in 2021

Scientific paper on work to assess the effects of heat stress on the behaviour of dairy cows using activity sensors to record 6 different behaviours, ambient temperature and humidity. It shows that raised temperatures and a higher heat index lead to an increase in general activity, changes in feeding habits and a decrease in rumination and resting behaviours, all of which are detrimental to animal welfare.

Lying behaviour of housed and outdoor-managed pregnant sheep

Manod Williams, Chelsea N. Davis, Dewi Llyr Jones, Emma S. Davies, Penelope Vasina, David Cutress, Michael T. Rose, Rhys Aled Jones, Hefin Wyn Williams

Published in 2021

A scientific paper investigating the mobility and lying behaviours of ewes housed indoors or reared on grass using video recordings. It shows that 1 min video samples can reliably predict ewe lying behaviours and that there are links between breeding characteristics (ewe age, single or double gestation, body condition index, lambing ease etc) and measured lying behaviours (average daily lying time, average duration of lying episodes etc).

A Systematic Review on Validated Precision Livestock Farming Technologies for Pig Production and Its Potential to Assess Animal Welfare

Yaneth Gómez, Anna H. Stygar, Iris J. M. M. Boumans, Eddie A. M. Bokkers, Lene J. Pedersen, Jarkko K. Niemi, Matti Pastell, Xavier Manteca, Pol Llonch

Published in 2021

A systematic review of the scientific literature on precision breeding technologies that can be used in pig production to assess welfare. It identifies numerous types of system  but many of these have yet still to be approved and none has the capacity to assess an animal's emotional state.
