Exploring the performance of system changes in Dutch broiler production to balance animal welfare, ammonia emissions and particulate matter emissions with farm profitability

Luuk S.M. Vissers, Alfons G.J.M. Oude Lansink, Helmut W. Saatkamp

Published in 2021

Scientific paper testing out various combinations of changes to elements of the Dutch broiler rearing system that might satisfy EU and consumer expectations in terms of environmental protection and animal welfare, while safeguarding the incomes of farmers. Those combinations that included animal welfare changes (lower stocking density, enrichment and/or daylight), tube heaters to reduce NH3 emissions and use of an ionisation technique to reduce fine particle emissions gave the best results.

A Retrospective Literature Evaluation of the Integration of Stress Physiology Indices, Animal Welfare and Climate Change Assessment of Livestock

Edward Narayan, Michelle Barreto, Georgia-Constantina Hantzopoulou, Alan Tilbrook

Published in 2021

Scientific review of articles dealing with 4 topics, both alone and in combination: animal welfare, the physiology of stress, impacts on climate change, and production in livestock farming. It concludes that, although all these areas are strongly represented in the literature, there is a lack of studies examining their interactions and their impacts on livestock production.

The upper temperature thresholds of life

Senthold Asseng, Dietrich Spänkuch, Ixchel M Hernandez-Ochoa, Jimena Laporta

Published in 2021

A scientific review of the extreme temperature thresholds for different living organisms, concluding that they are similar for most animals, agricultural crops and humans, and that excessively high temperatures, especially when these are combined with high humidity, cause heat stress and can be fatal even for short exposures.
