Invited review: Freedom from thirst-Do dairy cows and calves have sufficient access to drinking water?

Margit BakJensen, Mogens Vestergaard

Published in 2021

Scientific review of what is known about the water requirements of 1) young calves, depending on their feeding regime (ad libitum or limited milk), state of health and ambient temperature; 2) dairy cows, depending on their milk yield, feed composition and housing (under cover or on pasture). It concludes that research on the length and positioning of water troughs is needed.

Lying behaviour of housed and outdoor-managed pregnant sheep

Manod Williams, Chelsea N. Davis, Dewi Llyr Jones, Emma S. Davies, Penelope Vasina, David Cutress, Michael T. Rose, Rhys Aled Jones, Hefin Wyn Williams

Published in 2021

A scientific paper investigating the mobility and lying behaviours of ewes housed indoors or reared on grass using video recordings. It shows that 1 min video samples can reliably predict ewe lying behaviours and that there are links between breeding characteristics (ewe age, single or double gestation, body condition index, lambing ease etc) and measured lying behaviours (average daily lying time, average duration of lying episodes etc).

Effects of Different Housing Systems during Suckling and Rearing Period on Skin and Tail Lesions, Tail Losses and Performance of Growing and Finishing Pigs

Anita Lange, Michael Hahne, Christian Lambertz, Matthias Gauly, Michael Wendt, Heiko Janssen, Imke Traulsen

Published in 2021

Scientific paper investigating the impact of pig housing conditions on the incidence of tail lesions. It shows that keeping piglets in their farrowing pen during the lactation period significantly reduces the incidence of tail lesions and mortality in full-tailed pigs.

Ventilation in pig farms

Germán Bertsch

Published in 2021

This technical paper discusses ventilation as a critical factor for health and welfare in pig farming. It describes the different ventilation systems available and stresses that the choice of system depends on the needs of the individual pig farm. Exploring the performance of system changes in Dutch broiler production to balance animal welfare, ammonia emissions and particulate matter emissions with farm profitability

Luuk S.M. Vissers, Alfons G.J.M. Oude Lansink, Helmut W. Saatkamp

Published in 2021

Scientific paper testing out various combinations of changes to elements of the Dutch broiler rearing system that might satisfy EU and consumer expectations in terms of environmental protection and animal welfare, while safeguarding the incomes of farmers. Those combinations that included animal welfare changes (lower stocking density, enrichment and/or daylight), tube heaters to reduce NH3 emissions and use of an ionisation technique to reduce fine particle emissions gave the best results.

Invited review: The welfare of dairy cattle housed in tiestalls compared to less-restrictive housing types: A systematic review

Annabelle Beaver, Daniel M. Weary, Marina A.G. von Keyserlingk

Published in 2021

Systematic review of the scientific literature on the comparison of welfare indicators, including emotional status, natural behaviour and health of tethered and loose-housed cows. It shows differences in the prevalence of some diseases between the two types of housing and changes to some natural behaviours in tethered housing. There is insufficient data on the emotional state of the animals.
