Remote ante mortem inspection - Possibilities for improved sustainability in low-capacity slaughter

Arja Helena Kautto, Ingrid Medin, Viktor Almqvist, Sofia Boqvist, Ivar Vågsholm

Published in 2023

Scientific article comparing the effectiveness of remote compulsory official ante-mortem inspections carried out via video link with on-site inspections, with a view to reducing the need for official veterinarians to travel, thus compensating for the lack of available manpower for these inspections, while also reducing costs and CO2 emissions.

Environmental enrichment improves cognitive flexibility in rainbow trout in a visual discrimination task: first insights

Valentin Brunet, Thomas Lafond, Aude Kleiber, Léa Lansade, Ludovic Calandreau, Violaine Colson

Published in 2023

Scientific article studying the impact of environmental enrichment on the cognitive abilities of rainbow trout as a model aquaculture species. Using an operant conditioning device, after an acquisition phase in which the fish learned to discriminate between two colors, they all successfully completed four inversion learning tasks, demonstrating the cognitive flexibility of rainbow trout. They all passed the generalization task. Fish raised in an enriched environment performed better in the acquisition phase and in inversion learning.

Animal Welfare Science: Why and for Whom?

Alessandra Akemi Hashimoto Fragoso, Karynn Capilé, Cesar Augusto Taconeli, Gabrielle Cristine de Almeida, Paula Pimpão de Freitas, Carla Forte Maiolino Molento

Published in 2023

Article studying the value attributed to farm animals in scientific articles published in specialist journals on animal welfare and animal production at three different moments in time, over a 30-year period. It concludes that scientific publications on animal welfare do not, on the whole, give priority to the interests of animals.

Is it time for insect researchers to consider their subjects' welfare?

Andrew Crump, Matilda Gibbons, Meghan Barrett, Jonathan Birch, Lars Chittka

Published in 2023

Scientific article defining pain, differentiating it from nociception, and recalling work that has led to the conclusion that most of the 6 largest insect orders are very likely capable of feeling pain. It concludes that this fact should be taken into account by entomologists, and suggests extending the 3Rs rule (replace, reduce, refine) to insect research.

Canadian dairy farmer views about animal welfare

Catherine A Schuppli, Jeffrey M Spooner, Marina AG von Keyserlingk

Published in 2023

Article reporting the results of a survey of 22 Canadian dairy farmers to discover their views on animal welfare. Two centres of interest emerged: a focus on the animal, including the biology and emotions of animals, and dairy farmer identity, including the values farmers place on their work and their animals, the way they are perceived by society, and human-animal relationships.

A six-step process to explore facial expressions performances to detect pain in dairy cows with lipopolysaccharide-induced clinical mastitis

L. Ginger, L. Aubé, D. Ledoux, M. Borot, C. David, M. Bouchon, M. Leach, D. Durand, A. de Boyer des Roches

Published in 2023

Study identifying 7 facial action units taken from the eye and ear regions and from the mouth and muzzle for the detection of mild pain associated with induced inflammatory mastitis in dairy cows. It uses a six-step process that incorporates expression, selectivity, intra- and inter-observer reliability and measurement error (specificity and sensitivity).
